BEYOND THE VEIL IV Bands

THE HOUSE OF USHER

A welcome return to Leeds for one of the first bands to play for Gog Promotions in May 2001. The band were formed in 1990 and inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s poem of the same name. THOU have toured extensively across Europe playing all the major Gothic festivals on a regular basis. Gothic Rock at it’s best

One of the Legends of German Gothic music, The House Of Usher return with their sixth full length studio album. It follows a period of change, rebirth, and rediscovery following their last album Inferno / L’enfer which was released in 2002. After the dust settled THOU the new line up is Jorg, Markus, Ralf & Georg. Like a group of scientists locked in a lab they have been carefully nuturing and growing the seed that was planted when they visited Cornwall a couple of years ago. Radio Cornwall is by far the best THOU album to date. It encapsulates the spirit that is often found in their live performances. Opening with Wherever The Storm May Drop Us Down has epic Goth anthemn written all over it and would be more than apt for opening a live set with. The guitars are a perfect foil for Jorg’s distinctive vocal. More Than Average opens with haunting piano keys and the use of some charming female backing vocals with plenty of Goth rock tempo. A Dead Man’s Hand a true masterpiece of Gothic rock coupled with the lyrical genius of Jorg will ensure this track getting endless club play. Hide & Seek The power in this song is quite breathtaking. Will You Know Me will having you jumping around the room, simply a classic Goth track. For Better For Worse is a very subtle and clever lyrical love song. Radio Cornwall -I love the use of the last post and the George Bush sample, this track has already featured on a couple of samplers and should prove a popular song, very simple and clever hooks, with guitars to die for. The Floor She Walked Upon recounts a meeting with a long dead female spirit set the backdrop of frenzied Goth rock which at the very least will have your feat tapping. No Love Lost again with female backing vocals and the subtle use of minimal electronics the rollercoaster continues. It Doesn’t Matter yet another song that will take the clubs by storm which captures the esscence of the new THOU sound. Throwing Stones At The Wind has a quality indie pop song feel to it. Le Morte d’Arthur is a very atmopsheric song that even The Cure would be proud to have written, a perfect ending to a perfect CD. The CD will also be released in a double CD format which includes remixes and info files. Radio Cornwall is an essential Gothic Rock CD of this decade not just for Germany but for the wider world of Gothic Rock music.

SOL INVICTUS

Their first gig in the UK for 7 years promises to be something special. Featuring Tony Wakeford one of Englands/Europes finest Darkfolk lyricists.

Label Tursa www.tursa.com / www.darkvinyl.com/

Tracks

We Are The Dead Men
Old London Weeps
The North Ship
A Steed For The Devil
There Did Three Knights Come From The West
Twa Corbies
Semaphore Season
O Death Come Close My Eyes
The Devils Steed
The Edge Beckons
Where Stone Lions Prowl
Come Winter Rain
A Window In The Sun
The Silver Swan

The latest release from Sol Invictus is a classic piece of Dark Folk. Tony Wakeford is reminiscent of the minstrels and bards of Olde England who would retell history and experiences through song and verse. The creative combination of Tony Wakeford’s vocals, Violin, Acoustic guitar, Violin, Piano and minimalistic percussion. The end result is a mesmerising, dark and epic release.

We Are The Dead Men is probably the most Gothic lyrically penned Neofolk song. A clever simplistic reflection on death and being caught in it’s cycle. Old London Weeps captures a slice of London’s history with poetic perfection. The North Ship is a poem by one of England’s famous poets “Philip Larkin” and together with the arrangement captures the true spirit of adventure and discovery. A Steed For The Devil is a disturbing, dark atmospheric piece, where the Violin captures perfectly the sound of the Devils Steed. There Did Three Knights Come From The West is an Olde ancient English verse, which possibly could go back to the times of the Crusade. Twa Corbies is another ancient English verse set to music which tells the tale of two birds feasting on the dead corpse of a Knight. Semaphore Season a deep song about the constant march of the seasons and its ravages on life. O Death Come Close My Eyes a very intense instrumental. The Devils Steedcaptures the horror of becoming a familiar of the devil. The Edge Beckons continues the rich vein of Darkfolk. Where Stone Lions Prowl another masterpiece of Dark/Neofolk. Come Winter Rain is a short atmospheric piece. A Window In The Sun so simple but so enthralling. The Silver Swan has a hint of Mittelalter to it with medieval sounding pipes in the background. The Violin is exquisite in its capture of the sound of a dying swan.

The Devils Steed creates a very special atmosphere and this can only be magnified in the Live performance.

ARDOR

The UK debut of the new solo project from Corvus Corax/Tanzwut member and Cornix Maledictum frontman. Ardor also built and used the first E-Duddelsack in 2004 which you will get to hear at BTV IV. If you like Tanzwut and Heimaterde then you will love this slice of Mittelalter.

Ardor is a member of ‘Cornix Maledictum’ and ‘Corvus Corax’ and this is his solo project where “Mittelalter”, “Chrome Plate” & “Electro” collide. “Die Auferstehung” is demonic electro with monastic overtones. A very catchy chorus. “Mein Reich” gently floats from the speakers and then the ‘Duddlesacks’ kick in, with ripples of electronic herald an increase in tempo. “Lebe deinen Traum” is one of those tracks which will become very popular on the dancefloor, there is a refreshing electronic arrangement and again a killer hook from the ‘Duddelsack’ this will appeal to any fan of Tanzwut. “Flieg mit mir” is again an interesting fusion between ‘duddelsacks’ and electro. “White wedding” is a great version of ‘Billy Idols’. A very clever arrangement more electro than techno, the ‘Duddelsacks’ fit like a glove. “Dein Meister” is a slower piece but why should all electro be 180+BPM. “Der schöne Schein” reminds of the 80’s the sort of wave/ electro sound. “Ein letztes Mal” sees the tempo rising with duddelsacks very much to the forefront. “Der Pirat” is a sort of punked up electro arrangement with no duddelsacks.”Ektomie” is a very slow atmospheric piece. “The pirat” is the english version which brings the album to a close. If you are tired of future pop electro sound then this will convince you that there is still some originality and diversity in electronic music.

VIOLET STIGMATA

Having release to outstanding complilations of early material, the eagerly awaited release of Violet Stigmata’s new album Dyskronik Circus has arrived. Having wowed people @ Beyond The Veil III in Leeds with their powerful and dynamic live performance it gives me great pleasure to say Dyskronik Circus captures all that and more. The CD creeps open with the spooky Vulnerant Omnes . Before the spine tingling can cease Chloroform threatens to overpower with it’s driving church organ, Nico’s menacing vocals and full on guitars, conjuring a soundscape of pure deathrock horror. Will You? grabs your attention with its electronic intro before delivering a classic Violet Stigmata song, tight drums and bass, a wall of guitar and a keyboard crescendo. Great. No, I Won’t another clever use of keyboards with arrangements that delve deep into your mind. Trouble Fête the most Gothic and scary version of Happy Birthday you will ever here!. Plusieurs a pure monster of a track that will scare you witless and a vocal delivery from the school of Laibach. Let The Disease… starts with a gentle piano before descending into a keyboard arrangement fitting for any horror film. This should work very well on the dancefloor - C’est Fantastique. No me Recuerdo the waves of keyboards will wash over you like a violent sea, beautiful melancholy. Chrysalis Waltz the ultimate deathrock waltz. Wer Sind Sie Denn? i think it’s the first time I have heard VS sing a song in German with a strong cabaret feel to it. Void Eternal is a another monster that threatens to overwhelm ones Aural senses. The Whore Part I has a heavy Munster’s theme tune overtones which works to great effect in the hands of VS . The Whore Part II is a sinister sequel to Part I. Les Ondes Perdues time to be scared again as the this song invokes more dark shadows. In The Evening Mist has to be my favourite song on the album and again has a classic written all over it. You will believe eternal night has come to the land! Rock Around The Coffin if you were expecting a pun on one of Bill Haileys songs you will be sadly disappointed. However you will get a song about the claustrophobia from the dark depths of the mind. Absolute Oblivion down deeper into the darkness. Perfusion could be the intro to a Hammer Horror film. The album comes to an end with Ultima Necat with an instrumental which could be from Tales of the Crypt.

A quite amazing mix of horror and deathrock, I hope this album will finally see Violet Stigmata appearing on bigger events like The Wave Gothik Treffen in Leipzig. Also thanks to My friends at Pandaimonium Records, you will have a chance of winning copies of Dyskronik Circus as well as hearing tracks @ Black Veil , The Pack Horse, Leeds on 17th December 2005.

UNINVITED GUEST

Having opened The Devils Toybox @ Beyond The Veil III and received rave reviews for their debut live perfomance - we are pleased to have one of the UK’s rising Gothic Stars to play for us again. Prepared to be blown away and to hear for the first time some of the new material they have been working on .2006 promises to be a big year for Uninvited Guest.

Tracks

1. Cross my Heart
2. Angel Boy
3. Beautiful Orchid
4. When you’re dead
5. Hollow
6. Holy Infanticide
7. Tool of Control
8. The Devil’s Toybox
9. Requiem
10. Bows and Angels

Uninvited Guest remind me very much of Seraphim Shock and London After Midnight and in Dean Hathaway they have a special vocal talent. Live they have the image and stage craft to outperform the aforementioned bands. Uninvited Guest are one of the most exciting Goth bands to appear in the last 12 months and it’s only a matter of time before they will have the opportunity to go and conquer the German scene.

Faith in Oblivion is Uninvited Guest’s debut album and listening to it, is aural equivalent of opening a box of fireworks and being amazed at the myriad of colours. Opening with Cross my Heart , for 4 guys they produce so much depth and waves of sound which they have so far been able to replicate on the their live performances, the power will make even statues dance. Angel Boy like a fly lured into a web, the intro draws you in with the atmospheric programming then bang -the tempo pounces on you. Then again back the the calm of a Gothic ballad and then the chorus explodes from the speakers -wow!. Beautiful Orchid driving bass and delicate vocals pave the way for a Gothic Rock masterpiece, this is great, one of my favourite tracks on the album. When you’re dead opening with intricate programming and frantic guitar riffs it captures the frenzied madness of religious bigotry “Believe when your dead your dead, as they hammer in the nails on your coffin lid” Hollow is an enchanting atmospheric instrumental. Holy Infanticide starting with a monster guitar riff and pounding drums which fade into a gentle almost ambient slice with Dean showing Sean Brennan how its done. A rollercoaster ride into the dark. Tool of Control Lucas has constructed a clever piano arrangement which really worms its way deep into your skull, the arrangement on the song is something you would expect from a band with more years behind them Uninvited Guest, their musical craftsmanship is quite exquisite. The Devil’s Toybox A creepy introduction conjuring up the dark corners of playroom and the similated sound of a bat. Even the dead may rise to dance to this athemn. Already this song has proved a big hit at Black Veil- one of those songs you hear and you demand from the DJ to know what it is. This song is without doubt one of the most Gothic songs released in this decade so far, and will take its place on the among the Gothic classics. Requiem a delicate crafted ballad which reminds one very much of Tim Burtons ‘Corpse Bride’ or ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’. Bows and Angels signals the end of what is quite an outstanding debut album. Can’t wait for the next one to arrive.

Tara & Elie have now expanded with Pete Boyd joining on guitars to compliment the aural and visual feast of Goth Electronics. Their debut album can’t be released soon enough.
